All of these walks are within 15 min drive from the house
Fres – Countryside to NE
Quiet country tracks lined by dry stone walls, dropping into a tree-lined valley, over a dried up river bed, past old ruined cottages and a small church.
Fres – the churches
From the quiet square in Fres, to a church “Panayia of the Two Rocks” famous for its picturesque setting and well preserved frescos. From further on another church high in the cliff with wonderful views over the countryside below.
Melidoni – Foothills of the White Mountains
Climb to over 1000m starting from the village, to reach a great picnic place, passing shepherd’s mitato (stone hut), with spectacular views, and good birdwatching opportunities. Wonderful cool rarified air, even in summer.
Out of the valley to the picture book village of Macheri, nestling at the base of a high cliff at the mouth of a gorge. Interesting old properties and a traditional kafenion in the village, then passing by a ruined Turkish fort on the top of a hill.
Ramni and Tzakistra
Along a riverbed through a gorge, to a small church with great views, thru a hamlet to a modern Byzantine style church.
Stylos and the Diktamos Gorge
Starting at the freshwater springs of Stylos, through orange orchards and olive groves, to the mouth of the gorge.
And you can find more details of these in the excellent walking guides from Geoff Needle.
